Tips for an accurate quote when you live abroad

The more we know before the visit, the closer our first figures will be to your final budget. These details are worth adding to the form:

  • Photos of each room or facade concerned, plus the way in: narrow lanes and steep drives are common in hill villages and affect how materials are delivered.
  • Any existing plans, surveys or reports handed over when you bought, such as the energy performance certificate (DPE).
  • Whether planning consent is already in place – a prior declaration (déclaration préalable) or a building permit (permis de construire) – or still has to be applied for.
  • Your timing: arrival dates, letting seasons or a sale completion date that the works must fit around.
  • A rough budget, if you have one in mind, so we can suggest where to start.

How to read a French building quote

A French quote is more than a price. It describes the work in detail, states the VAT rate that applies, gives a period of validity and names the insurer that covers the company. Because it becomes binding once signed, take the time to ask every question before you return it.
